DRIVEN GAME SHOOTING IN THE UNITED KINGDOM AND EUROPE

Driven Grouse

The Red Grouse, found only in the North of England and Scotland, is considered by many of the most discriminating Wing Shooters to be the high bar of driven game shooting!

A line of 8 to 10 Guns are placed in grouse butts at ground level, with several hundred acres of grouse-filled heather surrounding them. Then the “beaters” begin pushing the coveys of grouse towards them. Swift in flight, hugging the contours of the wild heather-clad open moorland, the red grouse can reach speeds of 60 mph!

Their fast, nimble and elusive flight will test the best of shots! It is little wonder that driven grouse shooting is in such high demand.

Driven Pheasant

The high driven pheasant is one of the most challenging of sporting birds. Though pheasant shooting is possibly the most common UK driven shooting, all shoots are not equal. To present the very best in high-flying, driven pheasant shooting requires terrain: steep hills and deep valleys. And these are found in the West Country – Wales, Northumberland, Yorkshire and Scotland.

A line of 6 to 8 Guns are placed in a line along the valley floor and the pheasant are driven from the cover in the hills above .These “arc angels” can pass over the line as high as 40 to 70 yards - challenging shooting for every Gun!

Driven Partridge

The Partridge is a covey bird, the same as the Red Grouse, but in the UK they are driven, in the same manner as the pheasant, from high cover crops over the line of 6 to 8 waiting Guns. The birds burst from the cover in amazing numbers - when one Partridge flushes, the whole covey flushes. The shooting is fast and furious as covey after covey passes the line.

There are two distinct types of driven partridge - high driven – where they are pushed from steep hills across the valley of Guns or the lower-flying Partridge, where they are driven across the fields on flatter land. While the field-driven Partridge don’t present as dramatic a target, their speed and numbers still result in very challenging shooting.

Partridge shooting is also available in Spain which has a longer season and milder climate and is very popular, especially for during the extra months after the UK season has ended.

Wood Pigeon Shooting

The British Wood Pigeon is one of the most challenging of game birds. It is wild, fast flying and an aerial acrobat. These Pigeon are shot from a blind over decoys and the best times of the year for Wood Pigeon are in the late summer when the crops are being harvested or in the spring when the fields are being drilled. This is an incredible bird that is often referred to as the “Blue Grouse” as it is just as difficult and testing to shoot as The Red Grouse.

The British Driven Game Shooting Academy

Once a year, in the spring, I host the British Driven Game Shooting Academy – an introduction to all the aspects of British Driven Game Shooting: the best techniques to shoot high birds, , the proper dress, choosing the right shotgun and more!

The Two Day School is limited to 12 students in order to maximize the amount of individual time spent with each instructor

Upland Bird Shooting in the USA and the United Kingdom

In the USA, wing shooting is more usually takes the form of walked-up shooting - flushing birds over dogs. Quail, Pheasant, Chukar, Huns are the more common species.

In the UK, possibly the most scenic and challenging wing shooting the traditional American hunter could experience is shooting Red Grouse over dogs on the moor.

One Day Clays and Quail School

Each year we host a Clays and Quail Shooting
School in Georgia. The day begins with a classroom session with PowerPoint presentations and instruction using clay targets to simulate flushing quail. After lunch, you and your instructor spend the afternoon shooting quail in the field over pointing dogs. The School is limited to 4 students, with a minimum of 2, for the day.
